S. federal authorities. According to authorities, 16 of the 18 have been apprehended across the United States. They’re accused of conspiring to defraud the healthcare system and wire fraud, as well as aggravated identity theft. Terrence Williams, 34, is suspected of being a key figure in the alleged scam. The indictment accuses 19 people of filing false medical and dental claims worth $3.9 million (£2.9 million) and receiving $2.5 million (£1.8 million) in compensation. Williams, the then-New Jersey Nets’ 11th overall pick in 2009, allegedly filed $19,000 (£13,900) in claims for chiropractor care in November 2017 and obtained a $7,672 (£5,641) settlement. He later recruited more players, according to the indictment, who provided fake invoices from a Washington state wellness clinic, as well as a chiropractor and a dentist in Southern California. According to reports, some of the players transferred a portion of the money to Williams.
