They’re accused of conspiring to defraud the healthcare system and wire fraud, as well as aggravated identity theft.

Terrence Williams, 34, is suspected of being a key figure in the alleged scam.

The indictment accuses 19 people of filing false medical and dental claims worth $3.9 million (£2.9 million) and receiving $2.5 million (£1.8 million) in compensation.

Williams, the then-New Jersey Nets’ 11th overall pick in 2009, allegedly filed $19,000 (£13,900) in claims for chiropractor care in November 2017 and obtained a $7,672 (£5,641) settlement.

He later recruited more players, according to the indictment, who provided fake invoices from a Washington state wellness clinic, as well as a chiropractor and a dentist in Southern California.

According to reports, some of the players transferred a portion of the money to Williams.
