Mercy Aigbe is my mentor, not a competitor –Olajumoke Odetola
Fast rising Nollywood act, Olajumoke Odetola, is still in a celebratory mood courtesy of her Africa Movies Viewer’s Choice award for the Best Indigenous Act.
The actress in a recent interview told Saturday Beats that her happiness was borne out of the fact that she received the award for the first movie she produced, ‘Binta Ofe ge.’
She beat ‘aunt’ in the industry, Mercy Aigbe, but she also seized the opportunity to shut rumour mongers who insinuated that she is competing with her mentor.
She said, “I felt so honoured and humbled when I bagged the award. To be honest, I didn’t know why Mercy Aigbe’s movie was in the same category as mine; I would have expected it to be in the same category as Stephanie Okereke’s ‘Dry’ movie. It was not as if I set out to compete with her. Getting that award was a great honour for me and Mercy even told me that she was so proud of me and happy that I got the award. She is part of the few people who supported me when I began my career. It is very rare to see people in the industry who support the younger ones. She was one of the few people who supported me, so my achievement is her pride. Why will I be proud to someone who helped me to build my brand and supported me? I was humbled, I was honoured. She is my mentor and not a competitor. Mercy is very happy about my success and if you go to her office or her house, you are going to see so many awards. She has been there; she’s still here and still relevant.”
The actress hinted that she does not have time for a relationship as she is busy building her brand. She told Saturday Beats that when the time comes, she would settle with a man who is sincere.
“I am not married, but I am married to my career at the moment because I do not want any distraction. For now, no boyfriends. I have many ‘toasters’ but it is not yet time for me to be in a relationship. It is not that I am turning down offers; basically in life, you have to set goals and have plans. Right now, I don’t even see it as what I want, I just want to focus on my career, I don’t want any distraction for myself,” she said.
