KADIRI IKHANA HAILS COACH SALISU DESPITE MOROCCO THRASHING
Veteran coach, Kadiri Ikhana, has likened CHAN Eagles manager, Salish
Yusuf to ‘football magician’ who squeezed water from stone out of
nothing following the home base Super Eagles silver medal finish in
the concluded Championship for African Nations in Morocco.
Amidst the general impression by Nigerians that the team disappointed
especially on the final day when they were battered 4-0 by the hosts,
Ikhana said that was an over expectation against the backdrop of the
team’s inadequate pre tournament preparation.
“We must give credit to the players and the coach, Salish Yusuf”, Ikhana said.
” Yusuf is a magician. Look at the team’s poor and inadequate preparation.
“Look the spate of injuries that decimated the squad.
“When you consider the fact they were short of preparation, you
understand that team bonding was never to come easy.
“I never believed they could come out of the group stage given their
poor preparation.
“And you also consider the whether condition they passed through in Morocco.
“Of course, Salish is a magician to have weathered these storm to
reach the final which is Nigeria’s best performance in the CHAN
tournament ever.
“Morocco paraded a compound team that had been together for at least two years.
“If the Eagles had been together for say two months, they would have
been much better and the result would perhaps been different.
” Don’t forget too that the late first half goal and subsequent red
card took their toll on the team.
“So, in all, I must say the team did well and we must always take the
positives from any given situation to move forward”.
The 66-year-old gaffer had previously managed El-Kanemi Warriors,
defunct BCC Lions, Kwara United, Sunshine Stars, Kano Pillars and
Enyimba.
He has equally had managerial spells at the Nigeria U23 Olympic Team
and the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons.
After an illustrious playing career with Bendl Insurance, a club he
won the league with in 1979 and FA Cup in 1978 and 1980, Ikhana who
won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations with then Green Eagles, emerged CAF
Coach of the year 2003 after leading Enyimba win the CAF Champions
League that year.
He also won the domestic league with Enyimba and Kano Pillars.
