CHUKWUEZE OPENS UP ON LIFE AT VILLARREAL, READY FOR AYC QUALIFIERS
Villarreal teenage midfielder and former Nigeria U-17 star Samuel Chukwueze has set his sights at leading Nigeria’s Under-20 national team to the Africa Youth Championship which will hold in Egypt next year.
Chukwueze was part of a star-studded team also comprising of Kelechi Nwakali and Victor Osimehn that failed to qualify for the 2017 edition in Zambia on away goal rule after drawing 5-5 on aggregate with Sudan.
The team had won the first leg in Khartoum 2-1, but could not live up to expectation on home soil as goals by Chukwueze and Femi Bamgboye was not enough to help the then African champions to edge out the
visitors, as the scoreline stood at 4-3 in favour of the Sudanese at the end of 90minutes.
According to reports, Nigeria Under-20 coach Paul Aigbogun will in the coming months call up some foreign based players including Chukwueze to his squad, who are currently in Abuja training ahead of the start
of qualifiers for the Africa Youth Championship and the bronze boot winner at the 2015 U17 World Cup in Chile is eager to help Nigeria qualify this time around.
He said: “I was disappointed that we didn’t qualify for the last AYC, we had a very good team that won the U17 World Cup but luck was not on our side against Sudan. I’ll be very delighted if the coach invites me
to help my country and I’ll do my best to make sure we qualify.”
Speaking to Complete Sports, the 19-year-old who has scored four goals so far this season for Villarreal’s U-19 team, including the winner against Valencia last weekend insists he is enjoying his football in
pain after a well publicised move to Arsenal fell through and is only focused on breaking into the senior team.
“I feel good and great playing with Villarreal’s team C and under 19 but I’m looking forward to making my debut for the first team. I’m working hard and listening to the coaches and I’m learning a lot from
them.”
