7 Players From the Premier League Top 6 Who Could Leave For a Divisional Rival This Summer

Read Time:4 Minute, 20 Second

This summer’s transfer window is set to be one of the most exciting in years, as Premier League sides desperately look to sign quality players capable of helping them to bridge the gap with this season’s runaway winners Manchester City.

While in the past it has been unusual for divisional rivals to swap players, the upcoming transfer window could see this practice escalate rapidly – as a number of unhappy players look to move on while still playing for a top quality Premier League team.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal will all be looking to make shrewd signings this summer, and are certain to have some interest in the players who have caused them problems on the pitch this season.

So here’s seven players who could make a switch to a divisional rival in this summer’s transfer window…

7. Jack Wilshere – Arsenal to Liverpool/Chelsea

With a new contract at Arsenal still not a given, midfielder Jack Wilshere could well find himself looking for a new club in the summer.

Liverpool looks the best option for Wilshere, whose highly energetic style of play could work a treat for JĆ¼rgen Klopp’s side.

Chelsea are undoubtedly overcrowded with midfielders, but could look to move on a number of players in this area – replacing their disjointed band of central players with a more cohesive set-up. Wilshere could fit well into the Chelsea team, and offer a long-term replacement for Cesc FĆ bregas – especially if he impresses at this summer’s World Cu—oh…

6. Toby Alderweireld – Tottenham Hotspur to Liverpool/Chelsea/Man Utd

The longer Toby Alderweireld stalls on a contract extension, the more likely he looks to move on this summer.

The Belgian international has a clause in his contract that allows the club to extend his contract by a year in 2019, but this would also activate a Ā£25m release clause. Most likely using this as a bargaining chip, the former AtlĆ©tico Madrid player is playing hardball over negotiating a new deal.

It looks like Liverpool, Man Utd and Chelsea will be battling it out for the Belgian international if he can’t agree to a new deal with Spurs this summer – and the north Londoners will be eager to cash in while they can.

5. Nathaniel Clyne – Liverpool to Arsenal

Having missed the vast majority of the 2017/18 campaign with a back injury, Nathaniel Clyne could struggle to reestablish himself in the Liverpool squad next season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has excelled in the right-back position in his absence, and England international Joe Gomez is also more than capable of playing in the role.

Arsenal will look to bulk up their squad in the summer, and Clyne could provide some excellent competition for HĆ©ctor BellerĆn, as well as boosting the Gunners’ homegrown quota. However, the chances of the move coming off are slim – given Klopp’s concerns over the depth of his own squad.

4. Willian – Chelsea to Manchester United

The sale of one of Chelsea’s finest talents to Manchester United has now become somewhat of a summer tradition – as commonplace as Wimbledon or the lilting tune of the ice cream van idling down the road.

There is a very real possibility that the Blues winger Willian could end up at Old Trafford this season, as the under-used Brazilian looks to reignite his career under former boss JosƩ Mourinho.

Chelsea fans would undoubtedly be appalled by their club handed Mourinho another top quality player.

3. Anthony Martial – Manchester United to Arsenal

Clearly aggrieved by his lack of playing time at Old Trafford, Anthony Martial is highly likely to leave the club for big money this summer – allowing Mourinho to fund his summer spending spree.

While Juventus look to be the front-runners to sign the French international, Arsenal could definitely be in with a chance of signing the technically gifted forward – given that potential new boss Max Allegri will be looking to splash the cash if he becomes ArsĆØne Wenger’s successor.

2. Eden Hazard – Chelsea to Manchester City

Yep, it’s a long shot, but would you really put anything past mega spending Manchester City in this summer’s transfer market?

Eden Hazard has struggled to reach his full potential at Chelsea, and a move to the swashbuckling Citizens could see his tenacious style of play catered to by Pep Guardiola and the skilled players around him.

The Blues are likely to fight tooth and nail to hang onto their talisman, but the Belgian may look to call time on his career at Stamford Bridge in the pursuit of further glories.

1. Luke Shaw – Manchester United to Chelsea

It’s safe to say that Luke Shaw’s nightmare spell at Old Trafford is going to end this summer, and Chelsea look the most likely side to snap up the 22-year-old.

Once touted as one of the hottest young talents in English football, Shaw has struggled significantly since joining Manchester United – continually struggling with injury, fitness, and managerial support problems

Signing Shaw would represent a real gamble for the Blues, but if they can help him to recapture the form of his earlier years, the club could have an absolute gem of a signing on their hands.
