Former Nigeria international Peterside Idah says the Super Eagles need to believe in themselves as they aim to upstage Argentina to progress through to the next stage of the World Cup.

The African giants are second in Group D, with three points after two matches, but require to snatch at least a point against the two-time world champions to stand a chance of advancing to the last 16.

Having lost all previous four meetings with the South American giants at the quadrennial tourney, the former goalkeeper feels Gernot Rohr’s men have what it takes to break the jinx against the Argentine side.

“We need to believe that they can do it [against Argentina],” Idah told Goal.

“We just need to go out and play the way we played to beat Iceland. Look at the Germans, Argentines and Spaniards – when they come to the World Cup they just believe they can win the tournament.

“Why can’t we just believe that we can do the same. What is the difference between us and them? That’s what they have against us. If Brazil, Germany or Argentina loses, everybody will be in huge shock but not when Nigeria loses.

“It should not be that way. We need to begin to believe in ourselves and the African identity and I believe we will go further than anyone thinks.”
