The Society for Peace, Conflict and Practice on Wednesday conferred its fellowship on the Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdalla Adamu.
Ibrahim Sheme, NOUN’s Director of Media and Publicity disclosed this in statement in Abuja.
The conferment came at the end of the group’s 12th International Conference and Annual General Meeting held at the NOUN headquarters in Abuja.
Making the conferment, Prof. Isaac Oluwole, a member of its Board of Trustees, said that all the society required from the vice-chancellor was his willingness to contribute to the peace of the country.
The society had acquired Adamu’s approval to be the host for the three-day event when its executives paid him a courtesy call recently.
The theme of the conference was “Violent Conflicts and the Challenge of Peace-Building in Contemporary Nigeria”.
Speaking during the conferment, the chairman, Board of Trustees of the society, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, underscored the importance of hosting the conference by the university, which he said had been contributing a large chunk of experts to the field.
Responding, Adamu expressed delight with the recognition and assured them that the university would start looking at the possibility of establishing a unit at its Olusegun Obasanjo Good Governance and Research Centre.
He said Peace and Conflict Studies and Entrepreneurship were two courses that fetch NOUN more students than any other academic programme.
While giving the vote of thanks, the Registrar of NOUN, Mr Felix Edoka, said the recognition was not just meant for the vice-chancellor but the university at large.
