MUHAMMADU BUHARI


Born (December 17, 1942) Muhammadu Buhari is a politician, former Military Head of State of Nigeria (1983-1985) and the current President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 

He hails from Daura, Katsina State and can be described as one of the most charismatic and popular politicians from Northern Nigeria. 

This is owing to the fact that he has a strong appeal in the North, and is a remarkable political brand that has revolutionized the socio-political landscape of Nigeria in the fourth republic. 

After his first three attempts in the fourth republic, contesting for the Presidency in 2003, 2007 and 2011, Buhari Made his fourth attempt in 2015 through the All Progressives Congress Party, and defeated then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the People’s Democratic Party. 

It was the first time in Nigeria’s political history that an incumbent President lost an election in the country. 

Muhammadu Buhari attended primary school in Daura and Mai’adua before proceeding to Katsina Model School in 1953 and Katsina Provincial Secondary School(Now Katsina Government College) from 1956 to 1961. 

In 1964 he was upgraded to a military officer of the Nigerian Army and went for training as an officer at Mons Cadet Training School in Aldershot, England between 1962 to 1963. 

At age 21 Buhari was commissioned as a second lieutenant and appointed Platoon Commander Second Infantry Battalion in Abeokuta, Nigeria from 1963 to 1964. He went for another Military course in the United Kingdom in 1964. 

From 1965 to 1967 he served as Commander of the Second Infantry Battalion and appointed brigade major, Second sector, First Infantry Division, April 1967 to July 1967. 

During an unfortunate Civil War in Nigeria that lasted for three (3) years (1967-1970) Muhammadu Buhari was among the Military officers that defended Nigeria, leading military operations from Enugu, Afikpo, Ogoja, Akwa through to Abakaliki. 

After the Civil War Buhari attended special military training in Wellington, India in the early 70s and was appointed the Military Governor of the North-Eastern State from 1975 to 1976 and Governor of Borno State from February 1976 to March 1976. 

From the period of 1978 to 1983 he served as a Military secretary in the Supreme Military Council of the Obasanjo administration and served as General Officer Commanding Key Mechanized Divisions in the country. 

The 2015 Elections was remarkable as President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Prof Yemi Osinbajo campaigned on the promise of “Change” and garnered over 15m votes to win the election. 

President won the elections with a commitment to tackle corruption, tackle unemployment and tackle insecurity 

As the 2019 Elections approaches, President Muhammadu Buhari is under intense pressure to contest for a second term, from a cross-section of the nation. This comes as other groups want him to step down and rest after he concludes his first term. 

Described as a man of Integrity, patriot and firm believer in Nigeria’s unity, President Buhari was recently honored by the African Union and given the task of championing the Anti-Corruption crusade in Africa.
