Landlords are being strongly cautioned by the Economic Financial Commission Commission (EFCC) that doing business with “Yahoo guys” could result in a 15-year prison sentence.

The Commission announced this in advance of the following discussion in its public conversation series, known as “# EFCCConnect,” which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at 6 p.m. on Twitter Space.

At the forum, Sylvanus Tahir, the deputy director of legal and prosecution for the commission, and Cosmos Ugwu, the assistant director of legal and prosecution, will discuss the topic “Give your house to the Yahoo boys, spend 15 years in jail.”

Remember how the EFCC frequently cautioned property owners and commercial real estate agents to avoid making their properties available to fraudsters and cybercriminals?

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairman of the EFCC, previously visited hotel owners in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara, to inform them of how to cooperate with the Commission to stem the flow of cybercrimes.

Michael Nzekwe, the EFCC Zonal Commander, voiced worry over what he called the “cold complicity by hotel entrepreneurs.”

Nzekwe charged some of the hoteliers with cooperating with the fraudsters by providing them with long-term housing and access to the internet.

The Act invalidates Section 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offenses Act, 2006, according to the official.

“The clause provides for a prison term of between five and fifteen years without the option of a fine for any individual who permits the use of his premises for any infraction under the Act,” he said.

According to Nzekwe, the legislation does not acknowledge the idea that hoteliers are businesspeople who are unable to identify fraudsters.

The EFCC had issued a warning to hotel owners, advising them to always request proof of identification from guests and to enquire about their occupation when checking them in.
