According to sources, Barcelona have submitted a third offer for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski worth north of €40 million, although the deal has not yet been accepted.

The 33-year-old Lewandowski declared in May that his “story at Bayern is over” and wishes to leave the club he enters the final year of his contract, which expires in 2023.

This summer, Barca has made the Polish striker their main target, and coach Xavi Hernandez said he hopes to close a deal in May. The Catalan club has so far been unable to persuade Bayern to enter into transfer negotiations.

According to sources, Barca’s opening offer did not breach €40 million last week; however, their latest offer, including the set fee and add-ons, exceeds that figure.

Oliver Kahn, the chief executive of Bayern, has stated publicly that they intend to keep Lewandowski, who is anticipated to return for preseason practise on July 12.

Lewandowski and Barca coach Xavi were seen together in photos taken on Wednesday at Lio, a luxury port-side club on the island of Ibiza.

Barca’s transfer plans for this summer depend on the success of many business transactions.

They hope to announce the sale of 10% of their LaLiga television rights on Thursday for around €200m, before the financial year closes, and are working on operations to sell a 49.9% stake in their merchandising rights and a further 15% of their television rights.
