JUST IN: BUHARI ORDERS ADAMU TO END PROLONGED ASUU STRIKE IN 2-WEEKS

The four university-based unions have been on a protracted strike, and President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to end the strike and report back to him in two weeks.
Following briefings from the various government Ministries, Agencies, and Departments involved in resolving the standoff with the university unions on Tuesday, President Buhari issued the decision.
Recall that on February 14, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, began a one-month warning strike. Subsequently, other unions withdrew their services due to what they claimed was the federal government’s failure to meet their demands.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, are the other three unions that went on strike.
To get an update from the government team on how long the strike has continued, President Buhari called a meeting on Tuesday.
The President instructed the Minister of Education to see that the deadlock was resolved within two weeks and to report back to him after hearing from the pertinent MDAs directly concerned.
According to sources at the meeting, President Buhari also ordered that Senator Chris Ngige, the minister of labor and employment, must attend any talks to address the problem.
The sources added that the team interacting with the striking unions should include Mr. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
According to one of the individuals, the President praised Ngige for his efforts to date in settling the dispute.
Mallam Adamu, the minister of education, Dr. Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, budget, and national planning, Senator Ngige, Isa Pantami, the minister of communications and digital economy, Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan, the chairman of the national salaries, income, and wages commission, Ekpo Nta, and Ben Akabueze, the director-general of the budget office, were all present at the meeting.
