WOMEN’S U-20 WORLD CUP: FALCONETS BEGIN TOURNAMENT WITH 1-0 WIN OVER FRANCE

Falconets of Nigeria defeated France 1-0 on Friday in Group D’s opening match at the 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

Flourish Sabastine of the Falconets scored the game’s sole goal late in the second half.

The Falconets won six of seven games (they tied with Cameroon in Douala) to defeat Central African Republic, Congo, Cameroon, and Senegal and qualify for the championships at Central American.

Nigeria will play Canada and Korea after defeating France in Group C, while Spain, the runners-up in 2018, will play the hosts Costa Rica, Australia, and Brazil in Group A. Ghana, another African representative, will compete in Group D alongside the holders Japan, The Netherlands, and the three-time defending champions United States.

Germany will play Colombia, New Zealand, and Mexico in Group B. Germany has also won the competition three times, most recently in 2010 and 2014 when they defeated Nigeria in the final.

All group phase and quarter-final matches will be played at the Alejandro Morera Soto, which is a hybrid of natural and synthetic grass called stitched grass. The semi-final, final and third place matches will take place at the Estadio Nacional.
