UPDATE: LASWARCO SET TO REPRESENT NIGERIA AT 7th INTERNATIONAL WATER REGULATORS FORUM
The 7th International Water Regulators Forum (IWRF), which is scheduled to take place in Copenhagen, Denmark from September 14 to 15, 2022, has invited the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) to represent Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of LASWARCO, Mrs. Funke Adepoju, will introduce the forum’s first session, which will have the following theme: “Except in circumstances of force majeure: the influence of environmental and social disruptions on economic regulation. Who should be responsible for the increased risk costs?
Vera Eiro, President of the Board of Water and Waste Water Services Regulation Authority, Portugal, will discuss “Drought as a force majeure event in concession agreements: The role of the regulator” during the panel discussion. Gabor Kisvardai, Head of Secretariat at the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Authority, will discuss “How to be certain in an uncertain environment?—The regulatory experience in Hungary.”
Under the sponsorship of the International Water Association (IWA), whose mission is to ensure that water is managed wisely, sustainably, and fairly, the IWRF is the annual international gathering of the global network of regulators.
Adepoju said in a statement that LASWARCO was honored to represent Nigeria at the forum, which brings together high-level representatives of regulatory authorities and officials of organizations with regulatory and supervisory responsibilities over the delivery of water, sanitation, and water management services.
For us at LASWARCO, we appreciate the invitation and see it as evidence that the world is taking notice of the regulatory changes being championed in Lagos State by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in accordance with the THEMES Agenda to reshape the water regulatory environment.
“The fact remains that regulation is sacrosanct towards ensuring equitable access to water, safeguarding the health of residents, and protecting the environment. This point came to the fore at the recently concluded 3rd Lagos International Water Conference (LIWAC 2022) approved by Mr. Governor through which extensive deliberations were made on the centrality of regulation in unlocking investments and sustainable access to clean water and sanitation services.
“Without doubt, the lessons at the IWRF will further help to accentuate regulatory initiatives that will result in better outcomes in favour of the people,” Adepoju said.
The 7th IWRF is a key feature of the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition 2022, and the theme this year is: “Regulating Water Services in Times of Increasing Natural, Social and Economic Uncertainty.”
