SANCTIONS MANCHESTER CITY COULD FACE FOLLOWING ALLEGED FFP VIOLATIONS
By Adeniyi Onaara
A four-year Premier League investigation uncovered an astounding number of FFP violations.
Manchester City has had a terrible 24 hours. The Cityzens have been charged with breaking FFP rules over 100 times by the Premier League after failing to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal in a 1-0 loss to Tottenham.
The charges stem from the Premier League’s four-year investigation, which they claim the club failed to cooperate with.
The financial charges range from 2009 to 2018, and the charges that require a club to “cooperate with, and assist, the Premier League in its investigations” begin in 2018 and continue through this season.
This is not the first time City has been charged with violating financial fair play rules; the club was barred from competing in the Champions League in 2020 after UEFA found them to have violated the competition’s financial rules.
The Sky Blues, on the other hand, successfully challenged the ban in a sports court and were reinstated in the competition.
This will not be possible in this case, as Premier League rules prohibit clubs from appealing any sanctions in the CAS.
Because the sheer number of charges brought against City is unprecedented, it’s difficult to predict what sanctions might be imposed on the club if the FFP violations are proven.
Several potential punishments, however, have already been proposed. The club faces expulsion or suspension from the league, as well as other, less severe sanctions such as point deductions and unlimited fines.
The severity of the punishment will most likely be determined by how many of the violations can be proven. If the vast majority of these violations are proven, the club should expect to face one of the more severe sanctions.
The case will be heard by an independent commission, which will consider the charges and decide how much punishment City will receive.
The Sky Blues intend to fight the charges ‘vigorously,’ and will enlist the same large legal team that defeated the UEFA case
Even if the commission makes a decision, either City or the Premier League could appeal it, resulting in the formation of a new independent panel to re-review the evidence.
As a result, City supporters should not expect a resolution to this case anytime soon.
