NAIRA SCARCITY: LASU STAFF SLUMPS AND DIE ON ATM QUEUE TO WITHDRAW CASH

A member of staff of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. Lagos; slumped and died on Monday while on queue to withdraw money from the Automated Teller Machine of a bank within the campus of the University.

While on the queue, the staff identified as Adeshola Ademola-Johnson of the Bursary Department; slumped. apparently from exhaustion. Other by-standers made frantic efforts to revive him before he was taken to the health centre of the University. At the health centre, it was learnt that Ademola Johnson was pronounced dead.

Authorities at LASU are yet to issue an official statement on the incident. The deceased said to be in his fifties was believed to be hypertensive and could have slumped because he stayed on the queue for too long.

Many Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship being faced due to the scarcity of Naira notes. Most Point of Sale (POS) operators who have cash to pay out charge between N200-N350 as commission per N1,000 cash paid out.

Commeters in major cities have also been forced to trek long distances due to the inability to access cash to pay transport fares.

An artisan who spoke with Hotjist, lamented that he had to trek from Kara Market area in Ogun State, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, to Ketu area of Lagos metropolis, on Saturday evening due to the scarcity of cash.

“On Friday night, I couldn’t get enough money, so, I had to decide whtherto use the little money on me to eat or to transport myself to work the following day.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday announced the extension of validity of the old N200 notes until April 10, as a means to cushion the effects of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Naira redesign exercise.
