2023 POLLS: FOUR DAYS TO GOVERNORSHIP ELECTIONS, INEC SUSPENDSS SOKOTO STATE REC
With four days left to the governorship and house of assembly elections scheduled for next Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed Dr. Nura Ali, the Resident Electoral Commission (REC) in charge of Sokoto State, to avoid the commission.
As a result, he has been immediately replaced by Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa, the Administrative Secretary of the Commission in the State.
The information is found in a letter from the Commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, dated March 6, 2023, and addressed to the Commission’s state offices.
According to the letter with reference No: INEC/SCE/442/V.II, “This is to inform you of the commission’s decision for you (Dr Nura Ali), Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State, to stay away from the commission’s office in Sokoto State immediately until furthermore notice.
“The administrative secretary is directed to take full charge of INEC, Sokoto State office with immediate effect.”
Also, the commission instructed Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa, the administrative secretary of the commission in the state, to assume complete control of the commission in the state with immediate effect in a separate letter.
Hauwa was instructed to assume full responsibility for all administrative and election-related matters unless otherwise directed by the commission in a separate letter that was signed by the same commission secretary.
The letter further instructed her to communicate with Professor Muhammad Sani Kaita, the Supervisory National Commissioner, for more clarifications as needed.
In a previous report, INEC had on Saturday announced that all negligent regular and adhoc staff of the Commission during the February 25 elections will be barred from the forthcoming March 11 elections nationwide.
