Kano North senator Jubrin Barau has formally announced his desire to seek for the office of Senate President in the upcoming 10th National Assembly.

A day after Senate Chief Whip Senator Orji Uzor Kalu stated it was his turn to lead the chamber, Barau made this announcement.

Sen. Barau stated that the qualifications for the position of Senate President in the 10th Assembly should be based on competence, capacity, and experience during a press conference held in the National Assembly on Wednesday morning.

Given that he shares the same religion as the President and Vice President-elect, he spoke on the subject of religious concerns, saying that they shouldn’t be a factor while choosing the 10th Assembly’s leader.

The race for the position of principal officers of the 10th assembly is heating up as some federal lawmakers-elect in the Senate have signaled interest in running and are reported to be lobbying their colleagues for support.

Other Senators-elect who have signaled interest in the position of Senate President include Godswill Akpabio and David Umahi.
