SUPPLEMENTARY POLLS: AS INEC ANNOUNCES RESULTS IN 10 COUNCILS, FINTIRI LEADS BINANI

Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is ahead of Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani, a candidate for the All Progressives Congress, in the results collation for the Adamawa Governorship Supplementary Elections, which resumed late Saturday night.

The procedure began at precisely 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night when the local government returning officers delivered the results from Demsa and Yola South Local Government Areas to the collation center.

Eight council areas’ results, later combined with Demsa and Yola South’s, showed that Governor Fintiri increased his lead of 31,249 with victories in Demsa, Lamurde, Jada, Ganye, Song, Maiha, Hong, and Shelleng, while Sen. Binani only prevailed in Yola North and Yola South out of the 10 council areas whose results have been made public thus far in the Adamawa Supplementary Governorship elections.

However, there was controversy when the media tried to find out if Yunusa Ari, the Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner, had withdrawn from overseeing the holding of additional polls as the People’s Democratic Party in Adamawa had requested.

The PDP has continued to criticize the REC’s impartiality as an unbiased umpire after it was revealed on a leaked audio tape that the REC had asked the election officer in Fufore to assist “this woman” and complained about the neutrality of the REC.

But now that the collation process has started, Adamu Gujugu, the state commission’s administrative secretary, has presided over the proceedings rather than the REC, which had originally set the precedent.

According to the results from the 10 councils that had been tallied at the time this report was filed, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri still leads Sen. Binani in the polls for the Dougirei government house.

As it stands Fintiri has garnered a total of 3, 881 votes out of the 37,016 votes being contested in the supplementary polls while Sen. Binani has polled 2,527 of the votes.

Collation of Governorship will resume later at 11 am on Sunday, the embattled REC, Barrister Yunusa Ari announced the suspension of Collation when he made a surprise return to superintend over the conduct of the supplementary polls.
