The trial of Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a BRT bus driver who was alleged to have raped and murdered a 22-year-old fashion designer continued on Thursday, at the Lagos State High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) annex, after three stalled dates.

The trial continued with the Cross-examination of Inspector Jennifer, a police officer by the lead defense counsel, Mr. Abayomi Omotubora who questioned the witness on how she got to hear about the ongoing case.

During the cross-examination, the prosecuting witness narrated how the police got to find out during the course of investigation about one Doctor, who lives in Asaba and also an alleged victim of the defendant in this case.

The Police Inspector, mentioned before Justice Sherifat Sonaike, that the doctor, had alleged in her written statement, that the defendant had sexually harassed her and that she recognized him after she saw and clicked on his picture which was making rounds on social media at the time.

She also told the court that the 29-year-old doctor, voluntarily came up to say that she was sexually harassed by the driver on a bus she boarded from Ikorodu to Ketu on 29 December, 2021.

The officer said, “When the defendant was interviewed on this matter at the States Police headquarters, Ikeja, the interview was made public on social media. As soon as the doctor, saw the information, she clicked on the picture and discovered that it was the same driver that sexually harassed her on 29th of December in a BRT bus and that was how she volunteered herself to speak up.

The doctor, dropped a message for her friend on social media and we saw it, so we invited her. We also went in search of her from Lagos to Asaba, where she wrote her statement.”

Speaking further Inspector Jennifer, also attested that the defendant is also accused of raping another Passenger, on 25th November, 2021 without her consent at about 8:00pm, around Lekki-Ajah conservation centre, while mentioning that she believed the Doctor’s accusations because it is in synchrony with the allegations against him.

Ominnikoron is facing a five-count charge bordering on rape, conspiracy, felony, sexual assault, and murder preferred against him by the Lagos State government.

At the conclusion of the cross-examination, the Judge asked if there was no re-examination from the prosecution. In absence of non, Justice Sherifat Sonaike, adjourned the matter to 5 and 6 July, 2023 for continuation of trial.

Recall that on 5th of December, 2022, Sunday Ihende, a homicide police officer, had testified before the honorable court that, the police conducted a test on the bus that was driven by the defendant on the day he was alleged to have raped and killed Ayanwola Oluwabamise.

He also stated that the driver had ulterior motives, that’s why he doesn’t pick and drop his passengers at the authorized BRT bus-stops.
