HOUSES, CARS SUBMERGED IN ABUJA AFTER HOURS OF HEAVY DOWNPOUR
The Trademore Estate in Abuja was devastated by flash floods, which have since flooded their homes and cars.
On Friday, the rain, which began about 9 a.m., caused a traffic bottleneck since locals were cooped up in their homes.
Despite the fact that nobody was hurt, the residents association’s chairman, Mr. Adewale Adenaike, expressed concern that the estate’s flash floods had started to occur on a yearly basis.
Every time it rained, the FCT Emergency Management Agency gave citizens advice to stay off the moving water.
Owners of homes built on the river should leave their sites, the agency’s Director of Forecasting, Response, and Mitigation, Florence Wenegieme, said in an interview.
She said, “If you realise that your house was built on a waterway, please leave that location and move to higher ground. Thank God we are Africans, we have friends and relatives.
“Please, don’t insist that you must live there because you paid for that house. If you know you are living in a house that is built in a flood-prone area, kindly move to a safer place.”
The FCT Administration frequently pledged to reduce the flood, but the calamity continued to recur every year after it devastated Trademore Estate during prior rainy seasons.
In 2022, a similar flood was reported to have claimed three lives.
