JUST IN: ASUU ELECTS PROF. CHRIS PIWUNA AS NEW NATIONAL PRESIDENT
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new National President.
Piwuna succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a Soil Science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State. The leadership transition was formalized at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the union, held in Benin City on Sunday.
According to reliable sources, the election was closely contested between Piwuna and Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Piwuna takes the helm of ASUU at a critical moment, with renewed concerns over unresolved issues in the Nigerian university system. These include disputes over the sharing formula of the recently released Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) by the Federal Government, as well as persistent challenges such as underfunding and brain drain within the academic sector.
