Nigerian singer Qing Madi has described the music industry as being as profitable as the “drug” trade.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, the 19-year-old said a single performance can earn an artist what many Nigerians make in months or even years.

She noted that while music has brought her financial freedom, she avoids showing off her wealth online because she doesn’t want money to define her public image.

“Music money is not normal, it’s like drug money. I don’t think people really understand it. I’m not the type to show off what I have because I feel that would change how people see me. I don’t want to be known for money but I am rich,” she said.

Comparing incomes, she added that while the average Nigerian earns about ₦500,000 monthly from a 9–5 job, an artist can make up to ₦20 million from just one show.

Madi also suggested that Nigerians’ strong love for music may be linked to limited access to therapy, as many people turn to music for comfort and escape.
