A 41-year-old man, Uchenna Aghoha, has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife, Esther, during a domestic altercation in the Satellite Town area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, was said to have followed a heated argument between the couple that escalated into violence.
Sources familiar with the case revealed that the deceased had reportedly endured a history of domestic abuse in the marriage prior to the fatal incident.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the altercation appeared to be one of their usual disputes before it turned deadly.
“We are aware that she had been a victim of abuse in the marriage. On that day, it started like their regular fights, but it escalated. The husband allegedly punched her, and she collapsed,” the source said.
The couple’s 14-year-old daughter was said to have raised the alarm after witnessing the incident, prompting neighbours to rush to the scene, where the victim was found unresponsive.
She was subsequently taken to the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital, Ojo, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.
A police source disclosed that the daughter later reported the incident at a nearby police station, leading to the deployment of officers to the scene.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspect had been arrested and is currently in custody.
“The suspect has since been arrested and is in police custody. The body has been deposited at the General Hospital, Yaba morgue for autopsy, while the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation,” she stated.
The incident has renewed concerns over rising cases of domestic violence in Nigeria, with stakeholders calling for stronger enforcement of protective laws and increased awareness to prevent further tragedies.
