The Delta State Police Command has arrested a police officer, Nuhu Usman, in connection with the death of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, who explained that the incident happened on Sunday after officers attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence reportedly provided by members of the public.

According to Edafe, the deceased was intercepted while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel believed to contain a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. Police operatives were subsequently deployed to take him into custody.

However, the officer leading the operation allegedly fired his weapon in contravention of Force Order 237 and the standard operating procedures of the Nigeria Police Force, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an extrajudicial killing.

Following the development, the commissioner reportedly ordered the immediate arrest of the officer and directed his transfer to the State Headquarters in Asaba for disciplinary procedures.

Police authorities disclosed that the officer has been formally queried and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for possible sanctions and prosecution.

The command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions, stressing its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.

It also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice would be pursued.

Residents were urged to remain calm as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
