Charles Debi-Abate, a suspected serial killer, was taken into custody by the Delta State Police Command in Oghara.

A GLK Benz SUV, two English pump-action rifles, and a stash of 20 live cartridges were among the incriminating materials confiscated from the suspects, according to police spokesman Bright Edafe, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Thursday.

The reported murder of Destiny Idi, a 27-year-old member of Ovade Community on Ovie Road in Ogharafe, led to Debi-Abate’s arrest, according to Edafe.

He further mentioned that Idi’s murder was believed to have been committed on Saturday, August 5, by people engaged in cult-related activities.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, directed the recently deployed DPO Oghara, CSP Olasunkanmi Musiliu, to unravel what led to the death of the young man and arrest the perpetrators,” Edafe said.

Edafe claims that in response to this order, the DPO organized a group of officers from the division’s surveillance and anti-crime patrol sections to conduct a covert investigation that resulted in the identification and subsequent arrest of Debi-Abate, a 39-year-old man and member of the Aro Bagger fraternity.

The policeman revealed that Debi-Abate, the suspect, is an Oghara native who now resides in Mosagar and was detained because of his connection to the crime.

According to Edafe, a preliminary inquiry also showed that Debi-Abate was a member of the syndicate that killed one Onyekachi Chibuzor, also known as “ODOGWU” ‘M, 42, on Friday, July 28.

According to him, the suspect allegedly participated in a number of cult-related incidents in Oghara that were directed at supposed rivals.

Edafe stated that Debi-Abate denied any role in the gang that killed Solomon Idi, but he named two people, Onyeka and Paul (both with unidentified last names), as the murderers.

“On 9/8/2023 at about 1130 hours, the suspect led the operatives to the premises of the said Onyeka and Paul, but the team met their absence,” Eafe added.

“On a thorough search of their premises, two English pump action guns, twenty live cartridges, and one GLK Benz SUV with registration no. RBC-995-DG were recovered.”

He added that suspects and exhibits are in custody while a manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing.
