JUST IN: ECOWAS ORDERS IMMEDIATE ACTIVATION OF STANDBY FORCES AGAINST NIGER JUNTA
The Nigerian Republic must now have a functioning constitutional government, according to an order from the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS.
At the ECOWAS Extraordinary Meeting in Abuja on Thursday, President Omar Alieu Touray made the statement while reading the decision of ECOWAS on the Niger coup.
Additionally, it urged partner nations, institutions, and the African Union, or AU, to support the sub-regional body’s decision.
The coup leaders have resolutely refused all attempts to negotiate with the military junta in the Niger Republic, according to ECOWAS, which also denounces the ongoing arrest of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.
Direct the committee of the Chief of Defense Staff to activate the ECOWAS stand-by force with all of its components, according to a portion of the resolution.
“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
