SPORT UPDATE: BAYER LEVERKUSEN SIGN NIGERIAN-BORN NATHAN TELLA
Nathan Tella, an English winger of Nigerian descent, has committed to Bayer Leverkusen until 2028, the German club announced on Sunday.
Tella joins Leverkusen for a reported 23 million euros ($25 million) in total, including bonuses, making him the most expensive acquisition of a hectic summer of transfers.
Tella, 24, is a forward or winger who scored 17 goals in 39 games for Burnley while on loan in the English Championship in 2022–23.
In light of Leverkusen’s recent season’s run to the semifinals of the Europa League, Tella declared himself “impressed” by them.
According to Simon Rolfes, the sporting director at Leverkusen, Tella “brings experience with him but also has the potential to develop.”
“Nathan gives our attack additional versatility and he will strengthen our team with his pace and quality on the pitch.”
Granit Xhaka, a former captain of Arsenal; Jonas Hoffman; Victor Boniface; and Josip Stanisic were all loaned to Leverkusen this summer under the direction of manager Xabi Alonso.
After 11 seasons in the top flight, Southampton was demoted from the Premier League at the end of the previous campaign.
