UPDATE: BADARU CALLS FOR DEEPER SECURITY COLLABORATION WITH JAPAN GOVERNMENT
In order to improve military cooperation between the two nations, the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON, has asked for a stronger security partnership with the Japanese government.
On Thursday, September 14, 2023, in Ship House Abuja, the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Matsunaga Kazuyashi, paid Badaru a courtesy call.
The Minister appreciated Japan’s interest in Nigeria but insisted that further cooperation was required to strengthen both nations’ security. He said: “Let us work together the same way we work in the Gulf of Guinea.”
In addition to thanking the ambassador for coming, he said that his visit would open up more opportunities for engagement and security cooperation to reduce insecurity in the nation.
Earlier, Matsunaga Kazuyoshi, the Japanese ambassador to Nigeria, stated that steps have been initiated to increase military cooperation between the two nations in order to enhance security in both nations.
He emphasised that the National Defence College and Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force discussed the Military Cooperation Plan at the security forum held in Abuja, Nigeria.
In support of the assertion that the Military Cooperation Plan seeks to increase military cooperation with the goal of bolstering national security, he added that the visit sparked more robust and significantly advantageous contact between the Nigerian Defence Forces generally and institutions in Nigeria.
The ambassador talked about how the threat of terrorism has spread globally and how both countries must work together to share information and intelligence, which are crucial for preventing terrorists.
“Military cooperation and intelligence sharing are important in order to wage the war against terrorism.”
