HANDBALL: NIGERIA BEAT ANGOLA, WINS BRONZE IN AFRICAN WOMEN’S YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
Nigeria’s U-18 Handball women’s national team on Saturday night claimed the bronze medal at the Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship in Monastir, Tunisia after defeating Angola 28-24 in the third-place match.
The team had lost to Egypt in the semifinal stage and although they had booked their place in the 2023 World Championship, the team coached by Shittu Adewunmi Agboola was desperate to finish with some distinction in Monastir, Tunisia.
The team ended the first half 12-7 and despite the best efforts of the opponents, held on to win the contest 28-24.
Thus, Nigeria qualifies for the IHF World Women’s Youth Handball Championship which will be held in China next year (2023), and will also participate in the IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase after winning the zonal and continental phases in Ghana and Ivory Coast respectively.
The Nigerian team will arrive in the country on Monday with the officials of the Handball Federation of Nigeria billed to receive the contingent at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Meanwhile, in the final match that followed afterward, defending champion, Egypt, retained their title as they comfortably defeated surprise finalist, Guinea 29-16 to be crowned champion of the 2023 Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship.
