FLOOD KILLS 3, DESTROYS 1,838 HOUSES IN GOMBE —OFFICIAL
Mr Abdullahi Abdullahi, Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency, stated on Thursday that three people lost their lives and 22 others were injured in the 2023 flood disaster in the state.
Between May and October 2023, the disaster killed seven animals and destroyed 1,838 buildings and 257 farmlands, according to him.
Abdullahi stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe, where he revealed that the flood tragedy affected eight of the state’s 11 local government areas.
He further disclosed that it was against three LGAs predicted in the 2023 Flood Outlook
The worst-affected areas, according to him, include Akko, Funakaye, Balanga, Gombe, Nafada, Kaltungo, Shongom, and Yamaltu/Deba.
According to the secretary, the rains, which were followed by powerful windstorms, devastated farmlands, inflicting damage to farmers in the impacted communities.
He claimed that the government provided relief goods to catastrophe victims in order to alleviate their pain.
According to him, the state government is making an effort to expand the scope of the support services to all the affected communities.
“Governor Inuwa Yahaya has approved relief materials for some communities affected.
“We have also submitted reports of flooding in the remaining communities, and efforts are on to also provide relief materials to them,” he said.
He said the agency had written to the National Emergency Management Agency and the North East Development Commission to facilitate support for the victims.
Speaking on the impact of this year’s flood, Abdullahi said there was a drop in the number of lives lost, adding that effective sensitisation activities contributed positively in this regard.
“Upon receiving a flood alert from NiMet (Nigerian Meteorological Agency) and NASA, Governor Yahaya directed massive sensitisation as well as the activation of emergency response to mitigate the impact of the flood disaster.
“This helped in creating awareness amongst residents of the state,” he added.
“The state government and other relevant agencies are aware of your plight and making efforts to assist you, and I assure you that as soon as we receive the materials, we will reach out to the affected communities,” he concluded.
