TRANSPORTATION: LASG CRUSHES 1,500 MOTORCYCLES APPREHENDED ON PROHIBITED ROUTES
… says crushing exercise will continue on recalcitrant operators
In compliance with the ban on okada operations in the ten (10) local governments (LGs) and fifteen (15) local council development areas (LCDAs) in Lagos, the Lagos State Government destroyed 1,500 motorcycles that were arrested today. These motorcycles are commonly referred to as okadas.
While overseeing the crushing of the motorcycles at the Taskforce yard in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the safety and security of people and property. He said that the exercise demonstrates that the government is not rescinding its decision to apprehend, impound, and crush recalcitrant motorcycles plying the restricted areas.
Mr. Osiyemi underlined once more how the purpose of the routine crushing exercise is to teach Okada drivers, riders, and passengers to avoid the prohibited zones in order to avoid being arrested and facing up to three years in prison if prosecuted in accordance with the Transport Reform Law (TSRL) 2018.
“The ban on Okada in specified regions is crucial for maintaining order, reducing risks associated with unauthorized motorcycle operation, and also improving security.” Osiyemi added.
To be clear, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, and Eti-Osa are among the local government areas that are barred.
Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba, and Coker Aguda are among the Local Council Development Areas that fall under them and are also covered by the prohibition; other areas include Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga, and Odi-Olowo.
The Transportation Commissioner emphasised that okadas are not a safe form of commercial transportation and do not comply with state transportation policy, and he asked okada operators to abide by the ban order in the forbidden regions.
Mr. Olawale Musa, the Permanent Secretary of the Government of Transportation, as well as other government representatives, were also present during the crushing exercise.
