…. WAPA empowers 1,200 residents at Y2024 micro-enterprise support initiative
…. Gives 700 Graduands of Skills Acquisition Centres Free Work Tools
The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed that his administration is dedicated to enhancing adult education and skill development, using increased training programmes and adult education to equip citizens with important and high-quality skills.
This was revealed by Sanwo-Olu, who was speaking at the 2023 Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative Programme (MESI) held at the Blue Roof, LTV, Ikeja on Tuesday. He was represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
The state government has also, empowered 1200 vulnerable residents while distributing free work tools to 700 graduates of its Skills Acquisition Centres across the State.
He stated that by working with pertinent parties, such as academic institutions, non-governmental organisations, and the commercial sector, the state hopes to improve employability and provide prospects for revenue creation.
He claims that the goal of the Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative Programme is to empower the poor, the weak, and the graduates of the Skills Acquisition Centres in Lagos State.
“I am delighted to witness the collective efforts dedicated to uplifting the less privileged, providing them with opportunities for self-reliance, and contributing to the growth of our economy.
“Our administration’s recognition of the pivotal role of Micro-Enterprises in driving economic development, reducing poverty, and generating employment, led to its prioritization for support to create more job opportunities, and foster innovation for accelerated growth.
“This initiative is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to addressing the plight of the less privileged that are facing significant challenges in their daily lives. It is also a practical demonstration of our social inclusion policy geared towards ensuring that no one is left behind in our collective journey to the greater Lagos of our dreams.
Speaking further, he stated that creating a prosperous nation is a collaborative endeavour rather than just the responsibility of a single person.
“We must work hand in hand to ensure the sustainable growth of these micro-enterprises and provide support to those who need it the most.
The Governor however urged the beneficiaries not to sell the items as the State Government has invested significantly in various empowerment tools.
“You are expected to make judicious use of these resources. They are not gifts to be kept away but put to use as tools to facilitate your journey to becoming economically and financially independent as well as employers of labour.
The Micro-Enterprise Support Scheme (MESI) is a state government intervention and transformational programme through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation adopted to provide Lagos citizens with adequate tools for financial sustainability, according to Cecilia Bolaji Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, earlier in her address.
According to her, benefactors of this admirable generosity are those who need working gear to improve their trade skills.
She mentioned a few of the equipment, which included milling machines, sewing machines, professional hair dryers, barber clippers with generators and sterilising units, popcorn makers, sharwama grillers and toasters, tile-laying machines, industrial cookers, and equipment for processing gari.
“We recognize the plight of those who are less fortunate and face significant challenges in their daily lives. It is our duty as a government to ensure that no one is left behind and that everyone has equal opportunities to succeed.
“It is in this vein that in the last five years, this Administration has been working earnestly to actualize the electoral promises and manifesto of the All Progressive Congress (APC), by translating the vision into actions in the march towards achieving a Lagos that is at par with International best practices on developmental economic strategies.”
Ms. Racheal Ayodeji, an Ondo State citizen who lives in Ojodu, was one of the beneficiaries of the Lagos State Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative. She thanked the Lagos State Government for rescuing her from her situation as a penurious wanderer around the Secretariat in search of financial stability.
Every day, Racheal, who is pregnant and penniless due to financial insolvency, could be seen begging for charity from onlookers at the Alausa Secretariat. But then a good Samaritan from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation approached her and offered her a chance to get out of her situation by using the Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative.
