…Calls For Voluntary Compliance of Developers With State Building Codes

Engineer Olalekan Shodeinde, the recently appointed Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, has directed Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) officials to assist developers and builders in guaranteeing adherence to building codes and industry best practices, rather than tolerating illegal activity in the course of their work.

At the first meeting with representatives of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) at the agency’s Ikeja headquarters on Monday, Engineer Shodeinde delivered the charge.

The Permanent Secretary called for coordinated efforts from all staff members, especially those on the field, to ensure that the agency’s mandates are met, even as he expressed his confidence in the professionals within the agency to stop the building collapses and illegalities in the state’s built industry.

He begged agency employees to uphold their legal obligations to guarantee the stability and safety of structures throughout Lagos. He emphasizes how important it is for the agency’s regulatory specialists to reject corruption, refuse to tolerate irregularities, and act with firmness and decisiveness in order to help ensure that the building industry complies with legal requirements.

He said, “There will be consequences for any individual, including LASBCA staff members, found compromising on standards or engaging in practices that could jeopardize the safety of structures in the state. I am here today to plead with you not to condone any illegality, as there is no room for such in the present administration.”

The Permanent Secretary’s transfer to the Office of Urban Development was referred to as a “homecoming to familiar terrain” by Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki (FNIA), General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, earlier in his welcome speech.

Arc. Oki gave the Permanent Secretary a tour of the agency’s last four years of operations and important projects, emphasizing that the agency overcame many obstacles to fulfill its responsibilities during the period under consideration.

He promised that agency officers will work together to the fullest extent possible to make sure the Permanent Secretary succeeds in his new role.

Meanwhile, one of the organizations under the Office of Urban Development that the Governor recently established as part of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development’s reorganization for efficient service delivery is the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
