The Medical Social Services Department of the General Hospital, Somolu, recently joined the rest of its counterparts across the world to mark 2024 World Social Work Day.

World Social Work Day is celebrated all over the world every third Tuesday in March. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change.”

The Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, Dr. Babalola Dokun Ogungbemile, while celebrating the day with the department, encouraged patients at the hospital and the public to always speak to medical social workers on any issues bordering them, especially when they feel all hope is lost.

In a related development, the Head of the Department, Medical Social Services of the Hospital, Mrs. Abimbola Oludare Dixon, spoke to the patients on the significance of the day, advising them to be their neighbours’ keeper by whistle-blowing to a medical social worker if they noticed any strange happenings around them or anyone dying in silence from any form of abuse.

Mrs. Dixon, who further implored the patients to see medical social workers as their advocates and counsellors when in need of advice, also emphasised the importance of social workers in the world.

According to her, World Social Work Day is an opportunity for those in the sector to celebrate their achievements as well as raise awareness and support for the important role they play in the lives of children, families and communities facing adversity. She also enjoined the general public to join hands together and celebrate social workers for the incredible work they do.

Another member of the department, Mrs. Gladys Adefunke Monye, reiterated the need for the patients as well as the public to see social workers as their confidants should the need arise for them to talk to someone.
