ZAMFARA GOVERNOR CALLS FOR URGENT FEDERAL AID TO COMBAT BANDITRY
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has appealed to the federal government for immediate assistance in tackling the growing threat of banditry and kidnapping plaguing the state.
Lawal met with President Tinubu in Abuja on Tuesday and described Zamfara as being “under siege” from bandit attacks. He warned that if the situation isn’t addressed urgently, the entire northern region could face similar problems.
The governor highlighted the recent surge in banditry across several local governments, despite the state government’s efforts. He emphasized Zamfara’s position as a current hotspot for bandit activity, noting that even kidnapped victims from Kaduna were found in the state.
Lawal requested additional military personnel and equipment to bolster security forces’ capacity to combat the bandits. He acknowledged the limitations of state power regarding the military and police, underlining the federal government’s responsibility to direct security operations.
The governor also discussed the state’s recently launched Community Protection Guard initiative. These locally trained personnel are expected to work alongside the military and police, leveraging their familiarity with the terrain to enhance security efforts.
Lawal expressed optimism about President Tinubu’s commitment to taking “drastic steps” to address the situation.
