…As Fire Destroys 10 Shops in Early Morning Inferno

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) successfully curtailed a fire incident which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at the Alayabiagba Market, Mobil Road, Boundary, Ajegunle, just as Lagosians are advised to switch off all electrical appliances
at the close of business every day.

A statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the Agency received a distress call about a fire outbreak on Wednesday, 5th June, 2024 at about 2:26 am and immediately activated its emergency response plan.

According to him, on the arrival of the Agency’s Team at the incident scene, it was observed that 10 shops in Alayabiagba market were engulfed by fire. Further information gathered at the incident scene revealed that the fire started in one of the shops immediately
after public power was restored, the fire subsequently spread to other shops because most of the goods stored were curtains and clothing materials.

In his words, “No loss of life nor injury was recorded at the incident scene. However, the fire razed 10 shops in the market and destroyed several goods stored in the affected shops. The fire was completely extinguished by the combined efforts of stakeholders
and prevented from spreading to other shops and adjoining buildings”.

While noting that LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Service, LASAMBUS and NPF were responders at the incident scene, Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the Agency’s operatives ensured that the ravaging fire was extinguished to prevent it from spreading to other shops and adjoining
buildings. They also coordinated with all stakeholders at the incident scene to ensure a smooth operation and engaged in the management of the incident scene to avert a secondary incident.

The Permanent Secretary, however, advised Lagosians on the need to always switch off all electrical appliances at the end of each business day, install fire hydrants and embrace all fire safety precautions at home, offices and markets.
