COURT DISCHARGES BAYELSA SENATOR KONBOWEI IN ALLEGED FORGERY CASE

The senator for the Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Benson Konbowei, was found not guilty of forging certificates by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

On March 26, 2024, Konbowei, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was charged with three felonies, one of which included fabricating a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate.

Shortly after Reuben Egwuaba, the prosecutor, requested to end the case, Justice Christopher Oba cleared Konbowei and dismissed the accusation.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, who had earlier given Egwuaba a fiat authorizing him to prosecute the matter, withdrew the fiat and gave him instructions to withdraw the charge, Egwuaba told the court.

As a result, Egwuaba filed an application to drop the accusation, to which Chris Uche, the defense attorney, did not object.

But Uche’s request for the charge to be dropped was denied by Justice Oba, who decided to strike the charge.
