SENATE CONFIRMS NOMINATION OF HASHIMU ARGUNGU AS PSC CHAIRMAN
Onyemuche Nnamani and Fredrick Taiwo Lakanu were nominated by the Senate on Thursday to serve as Secretary and Member of the Police Service Commission, respectively, and as Chairman, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (Rtd).
The Senate Committee on Police Affairs Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed, a Jigawa East representative, filed a report regarding the confirmation of the Police Service Commission, which was reviewed before the confirmation was made.
However, Ahmad Lawan, the immediate former President of the Senate, said that the Nigeria Police Force has experienced a manpower shortage of 20,000 recruits in the last two years due to a power struggle over constable recruitment between the PSC and the police force leadership.
Under the Buhari government, the Nigeria Police Force was given a mandate to hire 10,000 personnel per year for a period of six years.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, expressed disappointment that the Supreme Court had to step in to resolve the issue and expressed hope that the confirmation would put an end to future conflicts between the police and the PSC.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Argungu to lead the PSC on June 10.
He takes on the role of Solomon Arase, a former Inspector General of Police who was appointed in January 2023 by the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
Additionally, Onyemuche Nnamani was named Secretary of the Commission by Tinubu, and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd) was named Member.
