AGF CAUTIONS SECURITY AGENTS AGAINST DETENTION OF SUSPECTS BEYOND TIME PERMITTED BY LAW
Security personnel around the nation have been advised by Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, not to hold onto suspects for longer than is permitted by law.
He explicitly warned security personnel to always respect the rights of suspects under their care, as outlined in Section 35 of the 1999 Constitution.
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the annual lecture of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), the Attorney General (AGF) issued a warning, saying that security personnel who were discovered to be holding suspects longer than permitted by the Constitution would face harsh consequences.

He stated that before making an arrest, law enforcement officials must exercise caution. He also stated that circumstances in which individuals are kept in detention cells for longer than permitted by the constitution or by court order will not be accepted and that those found guilty of breaking the law will face the appropriate penalties.
He said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration would not support any despicable behavior and that in his capacity as this nation’s chief law officer, he would make sure that no one infringes on the rights of others.
