JUST IN: PARALYMPICS: ONYIYECHI MARK WINS NIGERIA’S FIRST GOLD MEDAL, SETS WORLD RECORD
Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark broke the Paralympic record in the women’s 61 kg powerlifting category by lifting an incredible 145 kg.
This incredible performance breaks the previous record set by compatriot Lucy Ejike.
Mark’s performance has almost guaranteed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with one lift remaining. Her closest competitor is attempting 138 kg on her final lift, while Mark hopes to beat her record with a final attempt of 147 kg.
Team Nigeria has a long history of success at the Paralympics, particularly in powerlifting and athletics. Nigeria won 10 medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, four of which were gold. The squad has been a formidable force in powerlifting, with competitors like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo breaking world records and winning numerous gold medals. Nigeria’s sustained success in the Paralympics demonstrates the country’s commitment to supporting and developing its Para athletes.
