In a sting operation early Friday, men from the Lagos State Taskforce razed around 50 illegal constructions, including shanties and makeshifts, along Agungi Ajiran Road in the state’s Lekki district.

Speaking at the scene of the operation, the agency’s chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Adetayo Akerele, explained that it was part of a plan to restore sanity and decorum throughout the city in accordance with the current state government’s THEMES PLUS agenda.

Akerele added that the inhabitants of all unlawful structures in the region were presented with eviction papers two weeks ago, but they refused to leave.

According to him, “Over the years, residents have raised complaints about the increasing illegal activities within the shanties, which contributed to environmental degradation, posing security risk, and disruption of peace of the neighbourhood.

“Despite several notices served to the occupants, they still remained defiant and refused to vacate the area. We have removed over 50 of illegal structures this morning.”

Akerele stated that the illegal structures not only deface the well planned out residential area but also goes against the physical planning of State Government along Lekki-Epe axis.

“Their continued presence here has become a serious cause for concern that’s why our efforts demonstrate the State Government’s commitment to ensuring residential areas remain safe and habitable,” he stated.

Akere promised locals that the practice would continue indefinitely, as other shanties distributed throughout the Lekki axis had received removal notices. He urged the tenants to quit the shanties and remove any unlawful structures in the area or risk having them demolished by the agency.

“I admonish residents to report suspicious activities to the agency though our feedback channels to enable us put a stop to these irregularities that have been spread overtime. If you see something, say something,” he said.
