226 COMMUNITIES DESTROYED, 49 PEOPLE DIES IN KANO FLOOD

According to the Kano State Emergency Management Agency, since January 2024, 226 settlements in 27 Local Government Areas of the state have been completely destroyed by windstorms and flooding, leaving 49 people dead.
While briefing journalists in Kano, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, made this disclosure on Wednesday evening that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had earlier predicted a high risk of flooding in 14 local government areas of the state.
The following areas are affected: Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, Rogo, Shanono, Kabo, Garin Malam, Ungogo, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, Madobi, Bichi, and Kano Municipal.
The other local government areas are Bagwai, Kumbotso, Nasarawa, Kura, Gezawa, Rogo, Dawakin Kudu, and Dawakin Tofa.
Abdullahi-Kubarachi said that the floods destroyed 6,583 residences, which affect 38,814 people.
“A total of 8,289 farmlands, equivalent to 36,265 hectares, were destroyed, while 1,414 people were displaced and 139 were injured,” the SEMA chief said.
In order to relieve the victims’ pain, he said, the agency had acted quickly, visiting the affected communities to offer condolences on behalf of the Kano State Government.
“SEMA, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, organised several workshops to provide solutions for preventing environmental hazards, especially flooding.”
He complimented Governor Abba Yusuf for providing logistics and other necessary support to lessen the suffering of the victims.
In order to minimize floods, the Executive Secretary also advised people to empty the drainage ditches in front of their homes and issued a warning against building on waterways.
He urged affluent people to assist the agency’s work by providing emergency supplies to flood victims.
He also gave the public the assurance that the agency will keep working to protect people and property.
