#FEARLESSOCTOBER: PROTESTERS ASSEMBLE IN LAGOS AMID TIGHT SECURITY
As the nation celebrates its 2024 Independence Day, protestors gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos State on Tuesday morning.
However, a sizable number of security guards, including police officers, representatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, are keeping a tight eye on the protest.
Olanrewaju Ishola, the state commissioner of police, is in charge of the police unit stationed at the protest site.
The protesters are currently chanting solidarity songs, displaying placards bearing inscriptions such as “Reverse electricity tariff now, “End all attacks on democratic rights”, “Reduce petrol price to N197 per litre; end scarcity”, and “Profit soars while people suffer.”
Several civil society organizations, such as the Socialist Workers League, the Education Rights Campaign, the Take It Back Movement, and the Coalition for Revolution, are leading the demonstration.
This is the second time in two months that incensed Nigerians have taken to the streets to voice their disdain of the hardships facing their nation.
The action, dubbed #FearlessOctober1, was a follow-up to the August 1–10 #Endbadgovernance protest, according to its organizers.
They went on to say that the new protest was brought about by the Federal Government’s inability to meet their demands, which include, among other things, the development of human capital, government waste, insecurity, and the rising expense of food.
