BOBRISKY: TUNJI-OJO VOWS NOT TO DEFEND REPUTATION OF NCOS
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, stated on Monday that he would not defend the Nigeria Correctional Service’s (NCoS) reputation in response to claims made against it surrounding a crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.
Tunji-Ojo, who stated that the case involving the prominent crossdresser was about reputation management and the ethical behaviour of paramilitary agencies under his supervision, cautioned that he would not defend the agency if they erred in carrying out their duty.
A commission constituted by the Federal Government a few days ago determined that there was no evidence that Bobrisky did not serve his six-month prison sentence as alleged.
While dismissing the claims, the tribunal did admit that Bobrisky had some access to NCoS facilities while serving his term. The panel referred to the development as unethical and undesirable.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day Performance Contract Signing Retreat for senior Ministry officials and paramilitary institutions, the Minister stated that paramilitary agencies should boost up their internal security efforts for peace and national development.
The Retreat had the theme:ā United front for a secure nation and futureā with all the para-military services such as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS) the Nigeria Correctional Service, (NCoS) and the Federal Fire Service, (FFS) participating.
Tunji-Ojo said the NCoS in particular should be seen as transformative and reformative towards inmates, while rehabilitation of inmates should be prioritised with respect for human rights and citizenās dignity.
The Minister said: āThe critical role that the federal ministry of interior has to play in the aspect of our internal security is very key.
āEvery little effort from each and everyone of you is important because without security you canāt talk about investment, without security you canāt talk about tourism, and industrialization.
āWithout security, you canāt talk about stabilization of the capital or money market or even employment. So it means that there is no productivity without security.ā
Tunji-Ojo stated that it has become vital for ministry officers and staff to ensure that their priorities fit with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by properly managing their reputation.
He stated that paramilitary agencies play key roles in the country’s security architecture and encouraged them to be bold and ambitious in their ambitions.
āYou all have a critical role to play in the national security architecture, therefore, this is the time to be very bold, to be very audacious but tenacious if we must take Nigeria to the next level.
āThe Nigerian Correctional Service has to be a place where hopes are of hopes renewed and not a place where hopes are truncated and respect for human rights jettisoned. We must treat people with dignity, this is very key, ā the Minister asserted.
Tunji-Ojo went on to say that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has its work cut out for it after recent revisions, claiming that more grounds for passports and border security had been covered.
Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, stated that the retreat provides an opportunity for workers and agencies to refresh their shared sense of duty and devotion to the government’s primary mandate.
According to her, Ministry workers and personnel should rededicate themselves to creating an environment in which all Nigerians feel safe, protected, and empowered.
āTodayās gathering is more than a contract Signing ceremony, it is a covenant of accountability and a promise to deliver on Mr. Presidentās renewed hope agenda, ā Dr Ajani said.
