LAGOS, HEART OF NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC TRANSITION – SANWO-OLU
Lagos is at the heart of Nigeria’s transition, according to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as the country works toward a future in which technical advancement, industrial capability, and a workforce that is well-educated and prepared would power the economy rather than just resource extraction.
At the first Nigeria-Italy Investment Forum, which was recently held in Lagos and organized by NITA Engineering and Solutions and Advanced Global Solutions (AGS), Governor Sanwo-Olu made this statement.
The Governor, who was represented by Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade & Investment (MCCTI), said the forum, which was sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Italy, had the potential to strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and Italy and advance a shared commitment to a robust and diversified economy.
His words: āAs we navigate a global economy that demands resilience, innovation, and collaboration, the opportunity to align our economic goals with the expertise and investment interests of Italyās private sector holds transformative potential. Italy is recognised globally for its excellence in manufacturing, engineering, and industrial solutions – areas where Nigeria can benefit greatly, especially as we continue to diversify beyond our traditional economic base.
āThe Forumās objectives resonate deeply with the Lagos State Governmentās vision. We are pursuing a future where our economy is driven not solely by resource extraction but by technological innovation, industrial capacity, and a well-educated and equipped workforce.
Lagos is at the heart of this transition in Nigeria, and forums such as this allow us to foster partnerships that drive sustainable development across key sectors like infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy.ā
The Governor expressed delight in the potential of the Forum to address the creation of secure and legal immigration pathways for Nigerians to Italy and Europe.
āThis initiative aligns with the values of mutual respect and collaboration, offering new opportunities for cultural and knowledge exchange that strengthen our respective economies. Lagos, as a global city, has always welcomed such initiatives, as they contribute
to the diversity and dynamism that define our economic landscape,ā he said.
The Italian Ambassador in Nigeria, Stefano de Leo, affirmed Italyās readiness to deepen its investment in Nigeria, describing the nation as the future of Africaās stability.
āThis event will be the beginning of fruitful dialogue and discussion as it will facilitate synergies for economic and investment relations. We are strategically looking forward to investment and collaboration in health, training and skills development.
āItaly has always been looking to Africa as it offers its capabilities to solve the myriad challenges of the continent and I enjoin all partners to work together to ensure Nigerian-Italian relations become a success story,ā he said.
Representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bolaji Akinremi, described Italy as a reliable trading partner, having successfully executed joint venture projects with Nigeria.
āAs Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy, Italyās experience in renewable energy, innovation and agriculture would be invaluable. Italy can also complement Lagos State and Nigeria in infrastructure financing in transportation, energy, enhancing educational ties and boosting resilience, particularly in areas affected by climate change and security,ā he said.
Managing Director, NITA, Austin Omobhude described the forum as a remarkable opportunity for Nigeria and Italy to unite for mutual growth, opportunity and sustainable development. āThis is a marriage introduction ceremony of an enduring relationship led by NITA and
AGS.ā
