REPS PASS FOR SECOND READING; BILL MANDATING PORTFOLIOS FOR MINISTERIAL NOMINEES, COMMISSIONERS NOMINEES
A bill that would require the inclusion of particular portfolios in the nomination lists for Ministers and Commissioners that the President and State Governors submit has been forwarded to the second reading of the House of Representatives.
Okechukwu Dibiagwu, who led the discussion, emphasised that giving candidates portfolios would enable members of the national and state assemblies to perform more focused and efficient examinations throughout the confirmation process.
In related developments, a separate bill proposing an extension of the retirement age for health workers across Nigeria has also progressed to its second reading.
By keeping seasoned medical professionals in the field for longer, this bill has the potential to significantly alter the healthcare workforce.
The Nigerian Television Authority provided a brief update on this on Friday via its X account.
It read, “The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill seeking mandatory inclusion of portfolios in the nomination list of Ministers and Commissioners by the President or State Governors.
“In his lead debate, Sponsor of the Bill Representative Okechukwu Dibiagwu argued that attaching portfolios to the list of nominations for ministerial positions will enhance thorough scrutiny of nominees by lawmakers at the national and state assemblies.
“Another bill proposing an extension of the retirement age of health workers in Nigeria also scaled second reading.”
