As part of its efforts to turn market trash into wealth, the Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing market hygiene and garbage management.

At a market sanitation and security seminar on Tuesday at Sabo Ultra-Modern Market in the Yaba Area of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady and Chairman of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), disclosed this information.

In her keynote speech, Dr. Sanwo-Olu emphasised the significance of market safety, security, and hygiene as well as the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to implementing policies and programs that promote market safety and sanitation, particularly by enforcing standard practices that would safeguard the markets from theft, diseases and fire-outbreaks.

In order to lessen the likelihood of food or water contamination, which poses serious health and environmental dangers to the lives of traders and customers, she urged market participants to follow the State Government’s regulations for appropriate waste management and cleanliness.

The State Government is grateful for the Iyaloja/President-General, Chief (Mrs.) Folashade Tinubu-Ojo’s ongoing efforts to ensure adherence to market standards, the First Lady said, adding that the results are evident.

In order to promote economic progress and prosperity in Lagos State, she also asked market participants to coordinate the State Government’s efforts to create cleaner and healthier markets.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert applauded the efforts of the First Lady Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, in ensuring that the advocacy programmes for market leaders and stakeholders are spread across the 57 Councils of the State. He added that the efforts have resulted in significant positive changes witnessed in markets across the states.

“The cleanliness adopted within and around our markets and the regular sanitation as well as the security and safety measures that are visible are results of the efforts of the First Lady in ensuring consistent market advocacy in the State and this must be commended” he said.

Robert also asked market participants to keep helping the State Government transform Lagos into a 21st-century economy by making sure that maintaining market cleanliness is a top priority.
In a same spirit, the Commissioner promised that the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development would not compromise in its determination to carry out and oversee the State Government’s regulations regarding market safety and sanitary standards.

Along with facilitators from LAWMA, the Ministry of Health, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Drug and Law Enforcement Agency, and the Environmental Health Association of Nigeria, the event featured market leaders from Lagos Division, Royal Fathers in Yaba LCDA, and an arts competition for elementary and secondary school students with prizes for winners..
