EFCC ADMITS YAHAYA BELLO’S CO-DEFENDANTS TO BAIL, SEEKS ADJOURNMENT TO NOV 27 IN ALLEGED FRAUD CASE
The 30-day timeframe for the previously issued summons is still open, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which has asked for an adjournment in the new case against Yahaya Bello, the immediate former governor of Kogi State.
The commission has requested an extension of time for Bello to appear in court and granted administrative bail to his co-defendants, Abdulsalami Hudu and Umar Oricha.
EFCC Counsel Jamiu Agoro pointed out that the court’s October 3rd order had not yet ended during the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, hearing that was resumed before Justice Maryann Anenih.
“In that wise, we feel it will not be appropriate for us to take proceedings while that 30 days is still running. So we have discussed and agreed to come back on the 27th day of November, 2024, my lord,” he told the court.
Additionally, he stated that the prosecution’s attorneys did not find the November 20th date to be convenient.
Aliyu Saiki, SAN, the second defendant’s attorney, attested that his client had been given administrative bail by the prosecution and did not object to the request for an adjournment. ZE Abass, the attorney for the third defendant, agreed.
Additionally, the prosecution’s attorney asked the court to permit the notice of hearing to be posted on the first defendant’s last known address.
The judge granted the EFCC’s request for an adjournment and the issue of the hearing notice after hearing arguments from each of the attorneys.
“I have considered the application for adjournment by the complainant and issuance of hearing notice and the submission by the second and third defendants. The application is granted,” she said.
Justice Anenih then adjourned the case to November 27th for arraignment.
The former governor, alongside Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, are being prosecuted as 1st to 3rd defendants, respectively, in a fresh 16-count charge instituted against them by the EFCC.
