NIGERIA NEEDS TO EXPAND ITS REVENUE STREAMS TO SUPPORT CITIZENS, ALLEVIATE POVERTY – HAMZAT
Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos State, has emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to broaden and diversify its sources of income in order to help its people and reduce poverty.
At the conclusion of the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperative, Trade, and Investment’s three-day Year 2024 Management Retreat, which had as its theme “Take Part, Take Pride, Deliver Excellence,” held on Saturday at the Ibis Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, the Deputy Governor made this statement, pointing out that if not, Nigeria will still be told the same story thirty years from now.
Nigeria has the capacity to become everything it wishes to be, he continued, but the lack of resources to care for its people means that the nation must increase its revenue base.
He went on to say that the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment (FMITI) is very important to the country because of its contacts with multinational companies, which promote their presence and generate job opportunities.
Hamzat thereby called for the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce, Cooperative, Trade, and Industry to establish a unit saddled with the responsibility of securing grants for the state, adding that “There are so many grants that the Ministry can leverage on”.
Additionally, he asserted that in order to realize the objective, cooperation with other government bodies is required. Hamzat emphasized the significance of protecting the country’s assets and bemoaned the fact that young people had a difficult time finding work because the nation is unable to draw in or keep investors.

Earlier in her speech, Mrs. Folasade Ambrose-Medebem, the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperative, Trade, and Investment, emphasized how crucial it is that all Ministry employees show sincere passion for their work in realizing the #Greater Lagos vision, considering the Ministry’s pivotal role as the state’s economic engine.
She said, “The mandate of the Ministry is something that needs to be edged in everyone’s memory and what is critical is your role in achieving that mandate. The Ministry is committed to exploring ways to leverage the potential of the cooperatives in achieving the desired outcomes and to harness the data for better decision-making”.
In his presentation, titled: “Take Part, Take Pride, Deliver Excellence”, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Sam Egube emphasised the importance of staff participation and involvement in achieving the Ministry’s mission and vision.
Egube emphasized that there should be a clear connection between the Ministry’s objectives and the demands of society, noting that everyone must keep improving themselves until they fulfill the Ministry’s mandate. According to the Deputy Chief of Staff, the Ministry’s mission extends outside, overseeing companies and the state’s commercialization.
Egube went on to say that bureaucracy in the civil service prevents junior staff from sharing ideas and experiences, highlighting the fact that this kind of communication encourages participation.
