TINUBU ARRIVES BRAZIL FOR G20 SUMMIT

President Bola Tinubu is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the Group of 20’s (G20) 19th Heads of State and Government Summit.
Amb. Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations welcomed the President, who arrived on Sunday at 11.03 p.m. local time (Monday at 3.03 a.m. Nigerian time).
Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity; Mr. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; and Mr. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, were with him.
Amb. Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, and Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, are among the others.
Ahead of Nigeria’s socioeconomic changes, President Tinubu is also anticipated to undertake bilateral discussions outside of the summit.
After serving as the group’s alternating president since December 21, 2023, Mr. Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, is hosting the G20 summit in 2024. Nov. 30 marks the end of his term.
The summit, with the theme: “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” will focus on three dimensions of sustainable development—economic, social, and environmental—and the reform of global governance.
Among other topics, it will emphasize the fundamentals of the digital economy and the increasing global temperatures.
The Israel-Hamas conflict and the growing bloc conflict between the US and China will also be top considerations for the Brazilian presidency.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the yearly summit is typically when the results of the work completed by the nation with the G20 rotating leadership are presented.
The agreement reached over the year is approved by the heads of state and government, who also discuss strategies for addressing global issues.
As per NAN, the Leaders’ Summit, which is the culmination of the G20’s year-long efforts through Ministerial Meetings, Working Groups, and Engagement Groups, will be proposed for approval during the summit.
In addition to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, and Indonesia, there will be 19 more countries attending the summit.
These include the US, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Italy, South Africa, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
As part of the summit’s theme, da Silva announced a three-point plan to fight poverty, inequality, and hunger at the summit scheduled to hold from Nov. 18 to Nov. 19.
The organizers of the 2024 G20 conference invited delegates from the European Union and the African Union, and President Tinubu is attending.
On August 29, Tinubu received his Letter of Credence from Mr. Carlos Areias, the Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, who informed him of President Da Silva’s invitation to the 2024 G20 meeting.
“Food security is the main proposal of the Brazilian presidency at the G20 to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030,” Areias said, adding that Da Silva was excited to welcome President Tinubu to the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
